Hispanic Heritage Month
October is Hispanic Heritage Month and the students have been studying up on the history of Mexico and surrounding Central American countries like Guatemala. Much of the work we are doing is inspired by holidays and folk art of the region. Please follow our twitter feed for quick updates and photos. Posts include pictures of students creating yarn paintings inspired by the Huichol people of Mexico and students creating patterns on paper strips getting ready to weave. Also, we are talking about Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead. Students are drawing lots of skulls with awesome designs and beautiful colors!
A great month for art!!!

Artsonia
Families, we will once again be participating in Artsonia this year. Artsonia is our online art gallery.
This year students will be uploading more artwork due to the fact the NMES has some ipad minis! Yay.
Also, with the money we earn from Artsonia, I'd like to buy an ipad mini for the art studio! Just for us to use in art. So please make sure you visit Artsonia and support the art studio!
Thank you,
Ms. McCarthy

Dot Day 2013
At NMES, we are getting ready for "International Dot Day" on September 15th. In Art we are all reading the book "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds. A story about a young girl who finds her voice and passion by making a little dot. Inspiring and endearing, the book is loved by all. Look for dots coming home and when you come to visit NMES!
Also, here is a link to read an article about Peter H. Reynolds when visiting Boston. He was interviewed on "Chronicle" .
Visit Peter H. Reynolds' website Fable Vision Learning for ideas and more information about "The Dot and International Dot Day.
Plymouth Village
Student's in Mrs. Wilson's first grade class created a map of the area around Nathaniel Morton Elementary School. Student's worked together to replicate the buildings, streets, boats, stores, statues and more! Great job!!!
NMES 2nd Grade Arcade
This past June students in Mrs. Hughes 2nd grade class watched "Caine's Arcade" and were inspired to make their own cardboard games! 2nd graders study engineering and used their knowledge in art to create amazing arcade style games. This long creative process started with brainstorming, creating, critiquing, revising and finally: playing!

Creating Art with the lucky Scavenger Hunt winner!
Today was a great day! I got to spend some time working with the art scavenger hunt winner from the NMES 1-5 art show in April!
John was our winner! It couldn't have happened to a better kid! John got to bring a friend and we got to work creating an awesome clay shark!
They guys did a great job and learned some new techniques such as rolling out a slab, scoring and slipping and adding texture. Below are some pictures below of the projects in progress.
Now we wait for the sharks to dry and paint! Stay tuned for more pictures of the completed projects!
